WELCOME TO GRADUATION 2023

On May 8, 2023 at 7:00 p.m., Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar will host the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2023 at our building in Education City.

Video of the graduation ceremony will be available on CMU-Q’s YouTube channel following the event.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome to the Class of 2023 graduation ceremony at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. When these students began their studies in August 2019, we held a convocation ceremony to formally celebrate the beginning of their educational journeys.

For four years, each of these 104 graduates has gone through a transformation. They have acquired knowledge, learned the skills of teamwork and collaboration, and created a foundation for the rest of their professional lives.

On behalf of everyone at CMU-Q, congratulations to each graduate. We are exceptionally proud of the hard work and determination that has earned you a place on the graduation stage.

PROGRAM

The procession is led by the flags of Qatar and the United States, followed by the graduates. A bagpiper will lead the faculty onto the stage to join the students.

The faculty marshal, Dr. Selma Limam Mansar, declares the graduation officially open.

The national anthems of Qatar and the United States of America are played

At CMU-Q, we begin the ceremony with a reading of the Arabic poem, “Students of Knowledge and Virtue,” by Gibran Khalil Gibran. The poem reader for this year is Latifa Alnaimi.

The dean of CMU-Q, Michael Trick, welcomes everyone to the ceremony and shares his thoughts with the graduates.

Farnam Jahanian, the president of Carnegie Mellon University, delivers his address to the Class of 2023.

One of the most anticipated moments of the graduation ceremony is the announcement of the awards. The awards presented are:

  • Meritorious Teaching Award
  • Qatar Campus Scholars
  • Andrew Carnegie Society Scholars
  • Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards

During the last semester of the senior year, the student speaker is chosen from the graduates to represent the class at the graduation ceremony. Representing the Class of 2023 is Malak Alseaf, who delivers her remarks on behalf of the class.

When a new class of students begins their studies at CMU-Q, there is a convocation ceremony to welcome them officially to the university community. At that ceremony, the class receives a bronze tile that is stamped with the year of graduation. On Graduation Day, the student speaker returns the tile to Dean Trick, and it is later installed in the walkway leading to the building. The class tiles are a permanent part of the CMU-Q landscape, commemorating each class that graduates from the campus.

Tonight, graduates will receive their diplomas in one of five undergraduate disciplines: biological sciences, business administration, computational biology, computer science and information systems. Students who have earned honors will have those honors read after their names.

To close each graduation ceremony, Dean Trick will congratulate the graduates one more time. This will cue the graduates to toss their caps in the air in celebration.
