On May 6, 2024 at 7:00 p.m., Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar will host the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2024 at our building in Education City.

Video of the graduation ceremony will be available on CMU-Q’s YouTube channel following the event.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

There are 120 members of the CMU-Q Class of 2024, and graduation is the end of a long journey for each of them. I am delighted to celebrate this class at their graduation ceremony on May 6.

When these students began their studies in August 2020, the world was a very different place. Four years later, each of these graduates has gone through a transformation. They have shown resilience and a commitment to learning. They have become adept at teamwork and collaboration, acquired knowledge, and created a foundation for the rest of their professional lives.

On behalf of everyone at CMU-Q, congratulations to each graduate. We are exceptionally proud of the hard work and determination that have earned you a place on the graduation stage.

At CMU-Q, we begin the ceremony with a reading of the Arabic poem, “Students of Knowledge and Virtue,” by Gibran Khalil Gibran. The poem reader for this year is  Diram Tamer Nadim Tabaa.

The dean of CMU-Q, Michael Trick, welcomes everyone to the ceremony and shares his thoughts with the graduates.

Farnam Jahanian, the president of Carnegie Mellon University, delivers his address to the Class of 2024.

One of the most anticipated moments of the graduation ceremony is the announcement of the awards. The awards presented are:

Representing the Class of 2024 is Abdulrahman Bader Darwish Fakhroo, who delivers remarks on behalf of the class.

When a new class of students begins their studies at CMU-Q, they are presented with a bronze tile that is stamped with the year of graduation. On Graduation Day, the student speaker returns the tile to Dean Trick, and it is later installed in the walkway leading to the building. The class tiles are a permanent part of the CMU-Q landscape, commemorating each class that graduates from the campus.

Tonight, graduates will receive their diplomas in biological sciences, business administration, computer science, general studies and information systems. Students who have earned honors will have those honors read after their names.

Diploma presentation order

To close each graduation ceremony, Dean Trick will congratulate the graduates one more time. This will cue the graduates to toss their caps in the air in celebration.

Reception to follow.

Who is the Class of 2024?

This year’s graduating class from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) began their studies in lockdown, with only a screen connecting them to the campus community. As the Class of 2024 approaches Graduation Day, we reflect on their extraordinary journey.

The Class of 2024 is the largest graduating class in CMU-Q history, with 120 students, 45 of whom are Qatari citizens. They began their studies in August 2020 when the world was in pandemic lockdown. In the first two years of their university education, their classes were delivered through a variety of modes as the guidelines shifted–sometimes online, sometimes hybrid, and sometimes in-person. In spite of limited in-person opportunities, these resourceful students sought out new ways to engage with one another and the world.

As travel guidelines relaxed, more than half of the students expanded their global perspective by spending a semester abroad, either at the Pittsburgh campus or other locations. A remarkable 82 students have held leadership positions in student clubs and organizations, 89 students have done an internship, and 44 students have conducted independent research.

Representing a total of 31 countries and speaking 32 different languages, the Class of 2024 has thrived, turning challenges into opportunities. They have discovered innovative ways to learn and experience the world, and they have played a pivotal role in guiding younger students through their educational journey.

The Class of 2024 will graduate at a ceremony in the CMU-Q building on May 6.
